Hort Innovation is a not-for-profit, grower-owned Research and Development Corporation (RDC) for Australia’s $9 billion horticulture industry. Hort Innovation invests around $100 million in research and development (R&D) and marketing programs annually to provide benefit to industry and the wider community.

Hort Innovation is seeking a suitably qualified, experienced and capable delivery partner for the project: Optimise nitrogen transformations in mushroom production (MU17004).

The objectives of the services being sought are to help Hort Innovation:
• Optimise nitrogen inputs for mushroom crop production to maximise nitrogen use efficiency
• Develop an optimised microbial inoculum to promote nitrogen retention in reproducible mushroom composting
• Develop a detailed understanding of the microbial interactions between inoculum strains, between inoculum and compost substrate, and between inoculum and the button mushroom mycelium
• Develop optimised protocols for nitrogen supplementation during spawn run and cropping
• Develop a detailed understanding of how the activity of nitrifying bacteria in composting and cropping can be controlled
• Develop a mushroom grower nitrogen transformation optimisation Best Practice Management (BPM) guide and associated tools and resources based on project findings
• Increase the capacity of Australian mushroom growers to adopt BPM of nitrogen transformation optimisation via on-farm grower-hosted demonstration trials
• Complement on-farm demonstrations with a variety of methods to disseminate information and promote the adoption R&D. This may include print, electronic, social media and other face-to-face methods as well as field days.

Hort Innovation has prepared a Request for Proposal (RFP) document that provides background information, outlines the scope of services, the procurement process and the information required from interested parties.
