Background:
The Lake Broadwater Conservation Park is situated about 30km south-west of Dalby. Lake Broadwater is a semi-permanent freshwater lake covering approximately 150ha of the 1,212ha conservation park and is surrounded by cypress pine, eucalypts and brigalow open woodland.
The lake is seasonally filled by runoff from the surrounding plain and a short inlet stream draining higher land to the east and south. The lake dries out periodically and can remain dry for prolonged periods.
Lake Broadwater is listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia and is an important refuge for waterbirds and other wildlife. The lake is popular for picnicking, walking and birdwatching as well as powerboating, skiing, canoeing and swimming when the lake is full.
The Western Downs Regional Council manages the Lake Broadwater camping and recreation area, which was excised from the Conservation Park and is situated on the south-western edge of the lake.
The site includes camping facilities, a boat ramp, children’s playground, amenities, picnic facilities, and a community hall. The camping and recreation area are linked to the Wilga bush camping area and a bird hide, both within the conservation park, by over 2km of walking tracks.
The Western Downs Regional Council is also trustee of the Conservation Park and is responsible for management of day to day activities.
