Background:
The Western Downs Regional Council area is located in south-west Queensland, about 300 kilometres north-west of the Brisbane CBD. The Western Downs Regional Council area is bounded by Banana Shire in the north, the South Burnett Regional Council area in the north-east, the Toowoomba Regional Council area in the south-east, Balonne Shire and the Goondiwindi Regional Council area in the south-west, and the Maranoa Regional Council area in the west.
The Western Downs Regional Council area is predominantly rural, with numerous small townships and villages. The largest township is Dalby, with smaller townships at Bell, Chinchilla, Jandowae, Miles, Tara and Wandoan, and several villages. The Council area encompasses a total land area of about 38,000 square kilometres. Rural land is used largely for agriculture, particularly grain and cotton growing, with some sheep and cattle grazing and broadacre farming. Forestry and mining are also important industries, with the area being home to oil fields, coal mines, power stations and gas exploration.
Tara
In the south-west pocket of the Western Downs, one hour’s drive from Dalby and Chinchilla, the Tara district extends to Glenmorgan, Westmar, Meandarra, Moonie, Kumbarilla and Westmar. Tara has a rich history in cattle grazing and sheep shearing, with annual events that see the town swell from 2,000 to over 16,000 people. From the Tara Festival of Culture and Camel Races to the Sheepdog Trials, visitors from far and wide flock to Tara for a weekend of true country hospitality. The wide main street of Tara features beautiful gardens, a leafy-green park and an interesting array of retail shopping and cafes. The town is home to a new Food Works store with a well-stocked delicatessen, perfect for all your daily conveniences. Put simply, Tara offers everything you need for a quaint rural town.
Meandarra and Glenmorgan Myall Park Botanic Garden
More than a beautiful place where people can find respite and inspiration. It is a refuge for biological treasures from all around Australia, an outdoor classroom where people can acquire knowledge and motivation to be stewards of the plant and animals in our communities. Myall Park Botanic Garden is in an ideal location to feature Australian plants from semi-arid, arid and dry tropical regions. Various types of accommodation are available at Myall Park Botanic Garden.
Moonie
The outback town of Moonie QLD in the Darling Downs region is on the crossroads of the Moonie and Leichardt Highways. Moonie is approximately 331km from Brisbane, 113km from Dalby and 95km north of Goondiwindi. The Big Yabbie is the Moonie icon relating to their annual Moonie Yabbie Races. The Moonie Yabbie Races are held in November at the Moonie Sports Club and include a six-race program before the yabbies are put to the ultimate test in the Moonie Cup.
Westmar
Westmar is a small town on the Moonie Highway, around 45 minutes' drive west of Moonie. The Andersen brothers, owners of Western and Maranoa Transport companies, opened a fuel depot and rest stop at this location. The name Westmar was derived from the first part of the words Western and Maranoa.
Council recognises the importance of professional cleaning services to promote a safe and healthy space, provide high-quality cleaned facilities and amenities and to make a good impression for both locals and tourists enjoying the region.
