Background:
The new Dalby Northern Water Treatment Plant is expected to generate up to 260ML of wastewater per annum, predominantly brine concentrate from the reverse osmosis treatment step along with wastewater flows from the pre-treatment processes and membrane cleaning operations. This waste flow is a regulated waste, and it is proposed to manage this wastewater through storage and evaporation from a series of concentrate storage evaporation ponds. The Northern Water Treatment Plant Concentrate Storage Ponds (NWTP Concentrate Ponds) will provide storage for the concentrate waste and at the same time allow for the evaporation of the water component of the waste.
The evaporation pond area is to be maximised within the constraints of the land area available, with a minimum total pond floor area to be 37.5 hectares, comprising three ponds, nominally of equal size and similar shape and a minimum pond floor area 12.5 Ha each.
