Background:
Wandoan is one of six major towns in the Western Downs Regional Council (WDRC) area and is located on the Leichhardt Highway halfway between Taroom and Miles, with a population of approximately 666 residents. Surrounded by the fertile Brigalow country, Wandoan is known for its productive wheat harvests and cattle farming. Wandoan offers more than just scenic landscapes. It's a place of warm hospitality and rich heritage. Additionally, Wandoan is host to a local timber mill, natural gas extraction, growing solar farms and a new battery farm. There is a wide range of sports and activities for an active social and sporting community.
In early 2023, Western Downs Regional Council adopted an Aquatic Facilities Strategy which has identified the requirement for capital investment at the Wandoan Aquatic Centre to prolong end-of-life and ensure that the facility is maintained at a high level of functionality with improved safety for patrons and staff. Council has engaged an experienced aquatic engineer to develop a tender brief, supported by a detailed concept design for major remediation work. The Wandoan Aquatic Centre boasts large open grassed areas with numerous shade shelters, a modern kiosk and amenities, and an outdoor, concrete shell - fiberglass lined 33m lap pool and toddlers pool.
