Blooming Tribute: Artists Invited to Honour Geoff Miers with Sturt’s Desert Pea Artwork
Alice Springs Town Council is honouring a local legend through a new public art and landscaping project at the Undoolya Road and Lindsay Avenue roundabout, aiming to bring the space to life through a tribute to native flora and local community spirit.
The project will honour Geoff Miers - beloved horticulturalist, educator, and long-time volunteer - whose decades of service continues to shape Alice Springs’ green spaces. In recognition of his unwavering dedication, the 14th Council of Alice Springs has endorsed the formal renaming of the roundabout to the Geoff Miers Roundabout.
At the heart of the project will be a commemorative artwork inspired by the Sturt’s Desert Pea (Swainsona formosa), an iconic flower of Central Australia and a symbol closely tied to Geoff’s work and legacy. Known for its striking beauty and resilient growth, the Sturt’s Desert Pea reflects the spirit of both the man and the region he nurtured.
Council is now calling on local artists to submit Expressions of Interest for the design, fabrication and installation of the commemorative public artwork.
This initiative is part of Council’s broader commitment to celebrating community contributions and showcasing the natural and cultural identity of Alice Springs in public spaces.
