Cohuna Road Safety Boost Approved
Gannawarra Shire Council has confirmed two sites in Cohuna may receive road safety improvements under a Victorian Government program.
Part of the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, the sites will proceed to the next stage of planning, although are subject to approval pending a tender process.
Improvements to the intersection of Cohuna Island and Tennis Rds, including the installation of raised pedestrian crossings at either side of Apex Park, are planned.
A roundabout and speed reduction measures have been earmarked at the intersection of Channel and Market Sts in Cohuna.
Three projects in Kerang are also under consideration, including a school crossing, a roundabout and speed reduction measures.
Council chief executive Geoff Rollinson thanked the government for its financial support, which will go towards council-managed roads.
“This funding will be used to undertake road safety improvements that would not have been possible without significant financial planning or additional support from our state or federal counterparts,” he said.
“Community feedback was pivotal to our campaign for these upgrades, which will make walking and driving in these areas safer and easier for everyone.”
Late last year, the council worked with residents, local transport operators and school bus drivers to gather feedback on eight potential projects.
The five projects selected for grant funding were chosen based on the community input and the government’s assessment.
The projects have received grant approval, and council will confirm which will proceed once tenders and final costs have been evaluated.
