Tourism networking event to launch Corangamite Destination Action Plan
Community members, businesses, and tourism industry operators are invited to a networking event launching the Corangamite Destination Action Plan.
Mayor Kate Makin said the event—‘Putting the Plan into Action’—was an opportunity for industry stakeholders to meet and explore how they can work together.
“Given the huge role of tourism in Corangamite, this plan is really important for our region,” Cr Makin said.
“The Council Team will facilitate structured speed networking sessions, guided by pre-determined questions designed to foster connections and raise awareness of others in the industry.”
The event, at the Elephant Bridge Hotel in Darlington on Wednesday 19 November, will be emceed by Liz Price from Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism (GORRT).
Council has worked with GORRT to develop a new Destination Action Plan for our whole Shire, tying together the existing destination action plans for Volcanic Lakes and Plains, and 12 Apostles Coast and Hinterland.
“The previous plans focused only on specific towns in those areas,” Cr Makin said.
“The new one aims to take a fresh approach, exploring priorities for the entire Corangamite Shire as well as individual destinations.
“It identifies selling points and what is needed across areas like accommodation, built attractions, experiences, retail, food and beverage, and events and more.
“We want potential visitors to know there are dozens of things to do all year round.
“Slow down, stay longer and have more immersive experiences.”
Taking a whole of Shire approach to the plan is strategic, says Liz Price.
“It supports the region’s aspiration to drive year round visitation, longer stays, greater dispersal and a more immersive experience that encourages repeat visitation.
“We are launching the plan by getting to work on implementation! One of the key actions in the plan was to create more opportunities to connect businesses across the Shire, so join us for a business speed dating networking function.
“Sign up and get ready to showcase your business and learn what other businesses are also doing. Who knows? You might even meet your perfect match and create a new partnership or product opportunity.”
The plan was developed following four workshops held across the Shire and includes the following vision statement:
“We envision a sustainable, inclusive, vibrant and thriving visitor economy that celebrates our region’s unique landscapes, cultures, and communities.
"From the iconic Twelve Apostles and hinterland to the volcanic lakes and plains, visitors will enjoy authentic, year-round experiences that connect them deeply to place; through nature, culture, heritage, and hospitality.
"Our towns will shine with local pride, offering warm welcomes, quality produce, and meaningful encounters.
"Tourism will drive community prosperity, inspire careers, and foster environmental stewardship.
"As a world-class destination, we will ensure thoughtful dispersal, responsible management, and transformative journeys that leave lasting impressions.”
It lists objectives and actions for six priority themes:
1. Product and experience development
2. Brand awareness and marketing
3. Industry development, collaboration and community
4. Visitor Management
5. Visitor Servicing
6. Advocacy, infrastructure and investment
