Modern versions of Microsoft Windows, such as Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, include the ability to open basic ZIP files using their native file browser, Windows Explorer. This treats the compressed ZIP archives similar to ordinary folders.
However, their implementation does not include support for password-protected files using any modern encryption methods. Users will be able to open the folder, but attempting to view or open any zipped files results in the following error:
Compressed (zipped) Folders ErrorWindows cannot complete the extraction.
The destination file could not be created.
This is not an issue with the file which opens completely fine in other software that can read ZIP files, such as 7-Zip (free), WinZip or WinRAR.
If you are experiencing this issue, please talk to your IT Department about installing software that can open these files.
